Old dog's new trick Pt I
Yesterday I learned a new trick in Lightroom to allow me to see my clipping areas, so I thought I would share it in a post.
The 7 things I do to every photo in Lightroom
I often get asked about where to start with processing photos in Lightroom, what things do you need to tweak to get the ball rolling, as it were. So this is my "secret sauce" that I apply to EVERY photo that I import into Lightroom, and with these 7 changes it normally takes a flat RAW image into something that I can see the potential in.

The line that changed my photography for ever
One single comment on You Tube made me the photographer I am today.
Everything I know about photography, I learned from my guitar
I have been thinking about how we perceive learning a musical instrument (say a guitar) vs learning photography. Let me explain.
Size (& weight) matters: Fujifilm Part 1
It has been noticed by a few people that I have been shooting with a Fujifilm X-E2 recently, and I have been asked if I am moving to that system and ditching the Nikon system of cameras / lenses. So I thought I would write a little bit about why I have invested money in the Fujifilm system.
Scinde Building: B & A
After a discussion on the time spent processing photos, I thought I would throw up a quick before & after post showing the processing work involved in the first of my "Different Times, Different Light" images that I finished processing yesterday.
3 sides to the same (odd shaped) coin
It's been an interesting couple of weeks in my world of photography, and it culminated in 3 things landing on my doorstep within a couple of days of each other.
Does every photo need to be a work of art?
Not every photo has to be technically perfect or a work of art, some photos tell a story without the need for polish.
A month in the life
So for the month of November our local photo club ( Hawke's Bay Photographic Society www.hbps.co.nz ) has had a "photo a day" challenge in the Facebook group, so I thought I would compile my 30 images into a blog post.
All the hits, none of the misses
I shoot a lot of bad photos from Te Mata Peak, as well as some good ones, but you never see those bad ones, until now
Dark Backgrounds in daylight
I often get asked about how I create dark / black backgrounds in my macro photos (mainly of flowers) as seen in the shot above, so I thought I would put together a short explanation
Why can't I give my photo away for free?
This morning in my mailbox (email, that is) was another request for someone wanting to use one of my photos in a publication. With no payment, but with a photo credit.
Oh the nerve.
Isle of White
We spent yesterday on a trip out to White Island in the Bay of Plenty with White Island Tours ( http://www.whiteisland.co.nz ). White Island is 1 of 2 active volcanoes in New Zealand, the other being Mt Ruapehu, and sits 49km off the coast from Whakatane. Here are some photos from the trip.
In the Western Hills
For those that don't know I spend most of my working week designing houses for a Napier based architectural practice: Architecture HDT ( http://architecturehdt.co.nz/ https://www.facebook.com/architecturehdt/)
Sometimes my areas of interest overlap when get to visit one of our projects and take some photos.

Posting photos is like fishing
I was having a discussion with someone the other day about the risks of posting photos online, and their view was that if you put something online you deserve to have it stolen and used without your approval. Especially if you post large resolution images, and doubly so if you don't use a watermark.
