South Island Day 7 : 30 March 2018
Fine, 23°C
Up at 6:30am to clear sky and stars, I walked along the beach of Glendhu Bay to catch the sunrise @ 8am, then walked back to camp. Had some breakfast then relaxed and caught up on a few digital jobs.
We headed out about 10:30, drove up to the road to Treble Cone Skifield, then carried on a bit up Wanaka Mount Aspiring Road, then back past the camp and into town. We parked up in Wanaka and had a look around, then had lunch on the main beach road @ 12pm.
Back to the van and headed out to the airport to Warbirds over Wanaka. Today ( Friday ) was practice day so we thought we would make use of our 3 day Silver Pass tickets ( $279 ea ) to have a look around the static displays today, rather than on the day we came to watch the show ( which based on the weather forecast will be Sunday ). ( Note: This turned out to be a good idea as the programme on Sunday was so busy we wouldn't have had a chance ). We had a look around the helicopters and planes on the ground, watched some of the planes flying around, had an ice-cream and left at 3:45pm. It took a while to get out of the carpark and onto the main road ( should be better on show days when they close the roads ) and managed to get into town at 4:15pm to watch the free small airshow over the lake, from 4:30 to 5pm. A few planes, choppers and the Catalina landing on and taking off from the lake were all included.
Back to camp at 5:15pm, grabbed some tea and then walked 20 minutes towards Wanaka to shoot the sunset and some autumn colour in the trees. Back to camp at 8:30pm for coffee and bed.
