SOUTH ISLAND TRIP 2016: DAY 6, 23 JUNE
Woke up at 7am under a cloudy sky, which was no surprise as the forecast was for it to rain in the morning and clear in the afternoon. We drove up to St Bathans and parked opposite the Vulcan Hotel, and walked down to the southern shore of Blue Lake (the lake is about 10m below the level of the town). We sat and watched and waited for any sign of sunrise, but none came, only some rain. So we walked back up the hill to the campervan and had some breakfast.
We headed off about 10am, back down the road to SH85 then south to Alexandra. It was drizzling so we didn't stop and carried on to Clyde, for a drive through look at this historic town, then along the side of Lake Dunstan and into Cromwell. Again we didn't stop as the weather had worsened, so carried on north towards Wanaka.
We stopped at Puzzleworld (a puzzle theme park) at 11am for a look around, very entertaining, then into Wanaka itself. We found a carpark (the rain had stopped) and had a quick look around the shops. Wanaka has changed quite a bit in the last couple of years since our last visit, and now has the feel of a mini-Queenstown. Which is a bit of a shame as it had a quite villagey feel last time we were there.
Grabbed some lunch then drove out (pausing briefly to look at the Wanaka Tree) to Glendhu Bay to the camp for the night. We checked in , parked up, did laundry, powered batteries etc and relaxed.
We left at about 4pm and walked back towards Wanaka, on a nice track along the lake edge, to a spot with a view across Glendhu Bay for sunset. Shot there until about 5:30, and watched the antics of some 'would-be' fishermen, then walked back to camp for dinner and rest.
